How to explain your career gap in an interview
Employers expect honesty. What matters is how you frame your restart — not hiding the gap.
What to say
- State the reason briefly (marriage, kids, relocation)
- Highlight productive activities during the gap
- Pivot to skills and preparation now
- Show enthusiasm for the role
What not to do
- Over-apologise
- Blame circumstances at length
- Sound uncertain about returning
- Avoid the question
Practice structure
Use a 3-part answer: reason (short) → what you did → why you are ready now. Practise aloud until it sounds natural.
